In this article I will be talking about the ‘fashion couture’ and the impacted that I feel this music video ‘Something In The Water’ by ‘Brooke Fraser’ has on today’s sirsierty. Firstly here is a little introduction on Brooke Fraser. Brooke Gabrielle Fraser was born in Wellington, New Zealand, December 15th, 1983. She is the eldest of three and the daughter of the former All Blacks player Bernie Fraser. Brooke Fraser began studying piano at the age of 7. She composed her first songs at the age of 12, and then she taught herself to play acoustic guitar at the age of 15. Despite her skills as a singer Brooke Fraser has never take any singing lessons. In 2000 she moved to Auckland, where she began collaborating with producer ‘Matty J’ to help her with the album ‘What To Do With Daylight’ in 2003, which debuted at number one on the New Zealand charts selling over a 105,000 copies in New Zealand alone, enough to win seven times platinum in New Zealand. ‘Albertine’ was released in 2006 and was recorded in Los Angeles, although it has less feedback than the debut album, it obtained several awards including achieving double platinum status in New Zealand less than a month after its release. The third work, ‘Flags’, was released in 2010 and contains the international hit “Something in the Water.” This reached the number one spot on New Zealand album chart and 3rd in Australia and entered at 59th on the billboard 200 chart in the US and climbed as high as 3rd on the U.S. iTunes album chart. ‘Flags’ has been certified Gold in Australia and 3x Platinum in New Zealand where it was the 6th highest selling album of 2010.  The first single, “Something in the Water,” has achieved extensive radio success across the globe, notably receiving BBC Radio 2 A-list rotation upon release. The single has gone on to achieve double platinum sales in NZ where it spent 21 weeks in the 2010 singles bknk chart. The single has reached 2nd in the Dutch airplay chart whilst residing in the top 5 singles chart for 6 consecutive weeks. The single has been charted in Poland and Belgium at 15 and 23 respectively, as well as being certified Gold in both Germany and Italy.
“Something in the water” has a very fun girly feel about it witch sets the mood for the song. The fashion in this music video ranges from a blue hooded mini dress with a fan bow to a white singlet top, shorts, and a collar by itself and funky stockings. There is also a lace top with a peter pan collar. A theme of flowers comes through with all the garments that she wears sometimes it is a halo on her head other times it is embroidered on the top she is wearing and it is also pined to her top. The fashion culture of this music video is different from many other music videos in today’s society. It gives of a happen vide and brings a smile to my face each time a watch it (and while writing this article about it I have lost count of how many time I have watched it). Joy and happiness is something that we need a lot more of in today’s society ‘Brooke Fraser’s’ new album ‘Flags’ brings that joy into her music you can tell that she loves want she is doing because of the joy that is in her music and the amount of fun she has making music. Lace tops are very common in today’s fashion for women I am yet to see a guy wearing one. One of the tops Brooke Fraser wears is a white lace top and she looks very pretty wearing it many of the lace tops that I have seen girls or young women wearing are black witch I think is sad because black often hinds some of the amazing detail that is on them and people seem to think that black makes you look skinnier witch is not at all true. People should not be ashamed of their body’s and should wear what they want to no matter what people think of them. I find that the most interesting people in life are those who love life, do what makes them happy and wear what ever just because that’s what they feel like wearing that day.
In fashion often designers will design things that are in the ‘mood’ so to speak of their customers so if the customers are happy, fun, full of joy and want to look the part they are not going to buy clothes that are dark and sad because that is just not them they are more likely to go to a place that has the joy they are seeking. In this music video ‘Brooke Fraser’ gets wet playing on the line “there something in the water that makes me love you like I do” which I feel brings a carefree feel to the song this helps with the mood of the song and I feel the fashion culture of this video is also bringing a unique feel to the fashion picked for this song. If they had got it wrong the song would not have the same feeling to it as it does. I love the play on words in this song. It feels as if she is helping me write this without me ever meeting or seeing her with lines like ‘I wear a demeanor made of bright pretty things’ and ‘I got halos made of summer and ribbons made of spring what she wears what she wears what she wears’. Lady’s and Gentlemen you need to be proud of who you are life is to short to be any one else so just be you because nobody can be you better than you can.
Brooke Fraser has written this song in a way that has just grabbed me and has given me the desire to write about this song for this assignment/article.
The props in the video create an atmosphere that fits in so well with the song. The book that ‘Brooke Fraser’ is holding at the start of the video has ‘The Odyssey’ written at the top and ‘Homer’ written at the bottom of the front cover. She starts with it open then at 1.00 she closes the book I feel that she used the book in this song to help her tell the story of love she is try to tell the viewers. In addition to this ‘Brooke Fraser’ also loves to read I found this out after watching a documentary on the making of ‘flags’ that I got with the album ‘Flags’. ‘Brooke Fraser’ will often read books to help her find inspiration for her songs. The book has wave illustrations on the front cover play on the theme of ‘Something in the Water’. There is an old saying that goes like this ‘there must be something in the water’ witch I feel helps explain why ‘Brooke Fraser’ has used a teacup with water dripping into it. Interestingly though the teacup she uses in the video is an antique looking tea cup that young girls or young couple might use if they were to go to a tea party. The kinds of fashion you could talk about for antique teacups are endless. But in the end girls just want to have fun. But what kind of fun do they mean? I find that many girls today don’t seen to be have ‘fun’ they think that they are yet deep down they are hurting and need a friend who cares about them even guys are like this. People joy is a thing that we need to grad a hold of life because life is no fun when you’re sad all the time.
We were asked to write about a New Zealand band or solo artist and I wondered how I am going to write about a New Zealand artist when I do not like very many and most of the New Zealand bands or solo artist that I like either no one has heard of them or the fashion in them sucks. But I found ‘Something in the Water’ By ‘Brooke Fraser’ to have everything I was looking for this article. Fashion, a Christian New Zealand artist that I love and everyone knows who she is with that being said I have enjoyed talking to you about the fashion impact and the joy that the song ‘Something in the Water’ has or could have on New Zealand sirsarty today.
